Fedora

Cutting-edge and modern, backed by Red Hat.

  • Fairly fresh software and modern defaults.

  • Still binary, and heavier than a from-source lean build.
  • Focuses on mainstream x86-64/ARM — not vintage or exotic arches.
  • Corporate-steered release cadence.

Choose it instead if: You want modern software on new mainstream hardware with a big company behind it.

Arch Linux

Fresh, minimal, build-it-your-way — with the famous wiki.

Great at

  • Rolling release: very up-to-date software.
  • You install only what you add, so it stays lean.

Trade-offs vs. T2

  • Official binaries are x86-64 only — no 32-bit, no exotic arches.
  • Prebuilt, generic binaries rather than built for your exact CPU.
  • Hands-on setup; you assemble the system yourself.

Choose it instead if: You have a modern 64-bit PC and want fresh software without compiling from source.

Gentoo

Closest to T2

The closest cousin: it also builds everything from source.

  • Long compile times — the same source-build trade-off as T2.

Choose it instead if: You love the source-based philosophy and want the biggest source-based community. T2 is the leaner, more-architectures, René-driven take on the same idea.

Lightweight revival distros

antiX, MX Linux, Puppy, Bodhi, Linux Lite — built to resurrect old PCs.

Great at

  • Prebuilt and easy: download, flash, run on an old machine.
  • Very light desktops that fly on aging x86 hardware.
  • Friendly communities focused on old-hardware revival.

Trade-offs vs. T2

  • Usually based on Debian/Ubuntu stable, so software isn't the freshest.
  • Mostly x86/x86-64 — not the 25+ architectures T2 reaches.
  • Generic binaries, not tuned to your box.

Choose it instead if: You want the quickest no-compile way to revive an old 32/64-bit PC and don't need the newest packages.

Alpine / Void

Tiny, independent, often musl-based minimalists.

Trade-offs vs. T2

  • Minimal by default — you build the desktop up yourself.

Choose it instead if: You want a minimal container or server base and are comfortable assembling the rest.

And where T2 might not be for you

In the interest of an honest comparison — the real trade-offs of choosing T2:

  • It builds from source, so a big install or update can take real CPU time. (Fast prebuilt binary updates are on the roadmap.)
  • It's a smaller, enthusiast-driven project — fewer step-by-step blog posts than Ubuntu or Arch, though René and the community answer directly.
  • The installer is clear and guided, but not yet a glossy one-click wizard.
